“On Earth [that is to say, those who see with the physical eyes], seeing is believing. In the Kingdom of God [those who see with the eyes of the Spirit], believing is seeing. By ‘believing’ it is meant to be understood not as a mere system of beliefs [which falters and fails often], but as ‘faith’ [which is steadfast]. Faith is the substance [the realization] of things that are hoped for. Faith is the evidence [proof] of those things which are seen with the spiritual eyes.”
These are some of the things Balthazar has been sharing with me today. He is helping me work through my tendency to not believe anything unless I have physical evidence and proof, and can see with my eyes. Admittedly, this seem like an odd problem for a self-proclaimed mystic to have, but in spite of many undeniable spiritual experiences, I still find myself fighting self doubt. So this morning while talking with him, I finally confessed, “It’s hard for me to believe unless I can see it with my eyes.” He responded with what is above.
Believing is seeing.
Don’t see to believe; but believe so that you may see.
